FAQs

Sports Medicine providers are those who specialize in human movement, and getting you to perform at your best.
Every provider at Variable Movement is passionate about learning about your physical goals and helping you achieve whatever goal you set out to do.
-
You do not need a referral to see a physical rehab clinician or personal trainer.
Here at Variable Movement, we often co-treat patients with other providers in the Blue Hill and Ellsworth area including Physicians, Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, and Acupuncturists!
-
If you want to move better and pain free, you are an athlete.
If you were injured during exercise, or something is preventing you from exercising, then Variable Movement is where you want to be!
-
Our integrated model combines licensed physical rehab clinicians with certified fitness trainers under one roof. This allows us to seamlessly transition you from injury rehabilitation to performance optimization. We focus on addressing the root cause of your problem, not just treating symptoms, and we emphasize education and long-term injury prevention strategies.
-
We offer both individualized treatment sessions and small group fitness classes. Rehab is typically one-on-one or with a physical rehab clinician, while our fitness training can be individual or in small group settings. This allows us to provide the right level of attention for your specific needs and preferences.

We do not accept insurance. Please see below re: our stance on insurance.
We do not directly bill third party private insurance companies; however, we can give you a "super bill" which allows you to submit to your insurance company. (See FAQ re: superbills below.)
Dr. Dan is considered a "direct access" provider in the state of Maine. If you want to submit to insurance companies and work with Dr. Dan, you will need a referral from a physician, nurse practitioner, or chiropractor.

Absolutely. Our athletic training specialists work with athletes and active individuals to safely return to their sport or desired activity level. We use sport-specific training, movement analysis, and progressive loading protocols to ensure you're not only pain-free but also stronger and more resilient than before your injury.
-
We specialize in treating a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions including back pain, neck pain, joint injuries, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, chronic pain conditions, and movement disorders. Our approach combines physical therapy with fitness training to not only address your current pain but also prevent future injuries.
-
Yes. While Variable Movement does not work directly with insurance companies, we do provide superbills upon request. A superbill is a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company if your plan offers out-of-network reimbursement.
Please note:
Reimbursement is not guaranteed, and every insurance plan is different.
Your insurance company will determine whether they will reimburse you and at what rate.
Payment for services is still due at the time of your visit.
Providing superbills allows you the opportunity to seek reimbursement while still receiving unrestricted, patient-centered care, on your terms, not the insurance company’s.
WHY WE DON’T ACCEPT INSURANCE:
At Variable Movement, we do not accept insurance because insurance companies limit the quality and effectiveness of the care we believe every patient deserves. Insurance-based models control how long you can be seen, which treatments are allowed, how many visits are “approved,” and when your care should end; even if you’re not ready.
We choose a different path.
By not contracting with insurance companies, we can:
Design care around your needs, not within your insurance’s restrictions
Spend more one-on-one time with you every session
Use the methods and treatments that actually work, not just what’s reimbursable
Progress at the pace that’s right for you with no arbitrary caps or visit limits
This model gives you full access to individualized, high-quality, unrestricted care. It allows us to focus 100% on your results rather than on paperwork, approvals, and billing codes.
Simply put: we don’t work for insurance companies. We work for you.
